08/09/2010 - Hannah O'Sullivan is competing in the U.S. Women's Amateur Championship at Charlotte Country Club
CHARLOTTE -- In the U.S. Women's Amateur at Charlotte Country Club 156 golfers are trying to qualify for match play, but none are younger than Hannah O'Sullivan. The 12-year-old seems surprisingly comfortable among some of the sports best.
O'Sullivan is coming off a win at the California Junior Girls State Championship and doesn't seem phased being the youngest player in the field.
"That's what makes her so good," said Roger Pineda, the preteen's coach. "She blocks everything else out and takes everything one shot at a time."
O'Sullivan was steady Tuesday after carding a one over 73 on Monday, she battled tougher pin placements and hotter temperatures to put up an impressive 74, putting her safely into the match play portion of the tournament, a type of golf she excels at.
"I like the excitement," said O'Sullivan. "I like that if you do bad on one hole it doesn't matter, but in stroke play each shot really counts."
At such a young age, the question of burnout comes to mind quickly. Her parents are mindful of that risk and lean on parents of other juniors who have done it before to figure out the right plan for their daughter.
